Traditional Wide Board Solid Oak Flooring - Grading Information - Rustic Grade Floors

Rustic Grade Oak Flooring
Usually referred to as Rustic Grade flooring, boards may contain some or all of the following features:- Knots, cracked knots, burrs, wide colour variation, heart and some heart shake, occasional cracks and holes. There are no limits to the size of the features provided the boards are structurally sound. These floors are for the more adventurous and for those who wish to have an exciting, almost wild and rugged looking floor, a truly beautiful display of the variety shown by this timber a favourite amongst our customers.
Colour is mostly light to mid brown with more variation than the more expensive grades possibly appearing darker due to the increase in knots and burr and the wider colour variation
than the character grade. A truly vibrant, colourful floor with an abundance of character.
We have these cuts of timber available in stock sourced from England, France and America.

English Oak Flooring

Traditional English Flooring in a classic choice of timber.
The King of all Oaks, English Oak has been used for generations for building the strongest ships and adorning the finest houses. Most of our Oak is from Cumbria where the unique climate and geology produce wonderful variations in grain, texture and colour, from light to medium brown. It has more character and vitality than its European and American counterparts and small pin knots and burrs are an attractive and acceptable part of its appearance. Slow growth and limited managed output from these Cumbrian forests means we only produce a small quantity of this beautiful flooring.

French Oak Flooring

Our French European Oak is selected from the north where the maritime climate produces similar characteristics to our English Oak. It may be a little paler in colour and straighter grained, but is more abundant because of the large tracts of managed forests. In essence the grades are similar for both Oaks, but the appearance of the French may be a little different as described above.

American Oak Flooring and Appalachian Oak Flooring

When the early settlers moved across America, they adopted the native White Oak as the most versatile of timbers, using it for building and furniture making because it is not only tough & durable but beautiful. Our American White Oak is carefully selected from the north of the continent where the colour is more uniform and the timber has subtle variations in colour & texture. These American Oak floors display the sweeping grain of White Oak, possibly stronger in grain marking, and a richer and slightly warmer tone than the European Oak Floors and English Oak Floors. The term Appalachian Oak simply refers to the Appalachian forest from where these timbers are sourced.
