Corner joints
Corner joints should be butted or made with full equal mitres to accomodate crossgrain movement of the timber.
Each joint should be held and aligned with at least 3 worktop bolts and 4, size 20 biscuits. |
|
|
|
Mitre joints should be made with an equal angle and reinforced either with worktop bolts and biscuits or underneath with a plywood or metal plate. |
|
|
Screw fix the plate through slots (aligned across the grain) to allow for crossgrain movement.
The end grain on worktop joints and the holes cut for worktop bolts should all be edge sealed prior to assembly and silicon sealed during assembly.
See edge sealing below. |
|
|
Tap plinth
Joints between tap plinths and adjacent tops must be made with worktop bolts. Seal the end grain on both sides with endgrain sealer prior to assembly and with silicon during assembly. |
|
|
End caps
Cut and fit end caps next to Aga's, boilers and other hot appliances that run continously or for long periods of time. They are also necessary on tops adjacent to dropped hobs. The end cap reduces drying of the timber on exposed endgrain.
Attatch end caps securely with biscuits and a waterproof glue like Cascamite.
Appliances
A minimum gap of 15mm should be left between the worktop and any heat generating appliances, in every case follow the appliance manufacturers guidelines.

Scribing and fitting
Any holes and notches cut to clear pipes and other obstructions should be cut with a 5mm tolerance to allow for crossgrain movement. The edges must be smoothed and sealed with edge sealer. |

Edge sealing and oiling
All unfinished timber surfaces, edges, ends, the top and bottom and any holes made for fixings or fittings must be edge sealed, or oiled prior to assembly and fitting of the worktops.
Clean off any marks made whilst preparing the worktops and smooth any rough edges with 150 grit paper before sealing and oiling.
Edge sealing
All concealed edges of the worktop must be sealed before fitting, this includes under lay on appliances and sinks, all holes cut into the worktop to accomodate taps and other fittings, and worktop bolt slots and any other holes cut to accomodate fixings and any concealed end grain edges, butt end joints and mitre's also require sealing prior to assembly.
Use our edge sealer for this purpose found in the Fitting/ Care section of our store. Apply a liberal coat and allow to cure before assembly, any overspill onto visible edges must be wiped off and sanded with 150 grit paper so as not to impede the ingression of the finishing worktop oil.
Worktop oil
All other unfinished surfaces: top, bottom, visible edges and ends must be sealed with worktop oil before installation. Apply 3 coats to all surfaces and edges, and 5 coats to visible end grain, paying particular attention to cutouts for undermounted sinks.
See our Worktop oiling and care guide for further information about worktop oiling.
